In the late 1940s, Australia built CSIRAC, the country’s inaugural automatic digital computer, a massive device weighing nearly two tonnes and consuming power comparable to a small neighbourhood. Today the machine resides in a Melbourne museum as a symbol of early innovation. Decades later, Australia is channeling a billion-dollar government investment into quantum computing, aiming to create a "useful" machine in Queensland with US-based PsiQuantum, while startups Diraq and Silicon Quantum Computing are being evaluated by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for viability by 2033.
