Gavin Newsom’s promised tax returns still missing as July ends

Governor Gavin Newsom promised to release several years of tax returns by the close of July, yet his team has not confirmed if the documents will appear on the final day of the month. Two weeks earlier, the governor’s office had told reporters that the outstanding returns would be made public this month, aiming to settle debate over the halt in disclosures after the 2020 filing year. A spokesperson said the missing returns are “unremarkable” and align with information already shown in annual Form 700 reports.

The controversy is heightened by the recent guilty plea of former chief of staff Dana Williamson, who admitted to filing a false return and is set for sentencing in September. Newsom has labeled the probes into him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, as a witchhunt orchestrated by the Trump administration. The couple’s last released returns showed nearly $1.5 million in income and $480,000 in federal taxes, largely from hospitality businesses placed in a blind trust.
