Gen Z’s spending shows trust in value, not anti-capitalist sentiment

New Yelp research finds that Gen Z’s reputation for hating capitalism masks a pragmatic focus on getting value and verifying purchases.

Yelp, in partnership with Angus Reid Group, surveyed over a thousand Gen Z respondents and discovered that the generation’s alleged anti-capitalist stance is outweighed by a desire for value and trust. Nearly all participants check at least one review site before buying, especially for restaurants, beauty services, and fitness. Spending on takeout and dining out has risen sharply, yet price and menu details remain the top decision factors.

Detailed written reviews are preferred to influencer or star-rating cues, and TikTok serves mainly as a discovery engine while Yelp offers the deeper validation. The same scrutiny extends to AI tools, with less than half of respondents trusting AI-generated summaries. Overall, Gen Z spends aggressively but insists on proof that each dollar is justified.
