Giant Ice Block Breaks Off Greenland Glacier, Seen by British Research Vessel

A British research ship recorded a 1-km wide, 100-m thick slab of ice—about 18 million tonnes—splitting from Greenland’s Sorgenfri glacier.

While cruising near the head of 3-miippugut Fjord in East Greenland, the RRS Sir David Attenborough observed a sudden calving of a kilometre-wide, 100-metre-thick ice block from the Sorgenfri glacier, estimated at 18 million metric tonnes. Captain Matt Neill steered the vessel to a safe distance as the iceberg plunged into the water. The incident occurred during the GIANT project, a UK-funded, five-year effort to study how accelerated meltwater runoff may disrupt the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre and the AMOC.

Scientists deployed a fleet of autonomous tools—including the Meltstake drill, DriX sonar robot, and Boaty McBoatface—to measure heat transfer, ice geometry, and ocean conditions directly at the glacier front. Land teams installed radar and GPS sensors to monitor internal ice movement. Data gathered will feed machine-learning models and help develop an early-warning system for future glacier instability.
