Golden Retriever National draws nearly 300 dogs to Tanunda for beauty showdown

The 13th Golden Retriever National convened in Tanunda, South Australia’s Barossa Valley, drawing close to 300 golden retrievers from across the country. While a modest 60 dogs attempted the obedience trials, the bulk of participants contested the confirmation round, which emphasizes breed standards and appearance. Sydney breeder Janelle Salvestrin traveled 1,300 kilometres with six dogs, seeing four-year-old Brew earn second place in the open class.

From Queensland, Sherry Jewell entered veteran Bruce, who at nearly ten years old captured the Winner of Winners award on the first night. Ruth Thompson, secretary of the Golden Retriever Club of SA, spent weeks grooming and preparing nine dogs for the event, noting the demanding nature of obedience training. International judge Marjo Jaakkola, with 26 years of judging experience, highlighted the high quality and occasional difficulty in distinguishing top dogs. The show, held every three years, celebrates the breed’s attributes and the dedication of owners and handlers.
