Google Maps adds AI-powered food ordering and travel planning features

Google Maps introduced a broadened Ask Maps AI that can handle conversational requests such as ordering food, finding hotels and recommending events while considering a user’s saved locations and dietary needs. When a user asks for a specific dish, the assistant searches for open restaurants along the user’s route, adds the item to the order cart and partners with services like Square and Toast, with Uber Eats support slated for later.

The feature also enables users to edit place details by uploading photos, which the system parses for information like opening hours. A new Personal Intelligence layer, powered by Gemini, can draw on Gmail data—disabled by default—and will soon integrate Calendar to tailor responses to upcoming flights or reservations. Live transit widgets now provide up-to-date delay information for buses, trains, subways and ferries. The enhancements are live in the United States and will gradually reach Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan and Mexico.
