Google to retire Assistant on Android devices starting September 4
Google will phase out Google Assistant on phones, tablets and connected wearables beginning September 4, replacing it with the Gemini AI assistant where available.
Google announced that it will begin disabling Google Assistant on Android phones, tablets and associated hardware on 4 September, with the process extending over a few weeks to reach all users. The company explained that in markets where its Gemini AI is available and devices satisfy minimum specs, users will only have access to the Gemini-enabled assistant. Paired gadgets such as Wear OS smartwatches, headphones, earbuds and Android Auto vehicles will also lose Assistant capability, while cars that run Google’s built-in system will retain it for now.
The change does not impact Google Home speakers or Google TV platforms, which will keep the legacy assistant after the September deadline. The move accelerates a plan originally slated for 2025 to retire Assistant on most mobile devices, effectively ending its presence on Android smartphones within weeks.
