GOP gubernatorial hopeful urges public to turn backs on mayor at 9/11 ceremony

Bruce Blakeman, the Republican contender for New York governor, told reporters in Albany that the city’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, should not be welcomed at this year’s 9/11 memorial service. Citing his own family loss in the south tower, Blakeman said families have the right to request the mayor’s absence and, if he appears, to turn their backs as a peaceful protest. He accused Mamdani of failing to denounce anti-Israel slogans such as “globalize the intifada,” linking the mayor’s silence to the tragedy of 9/11.

Mamdani responded that he intends to attend and honor the victims, survivors, and first responders. Former Governor George Pataki, who opened a leadership center nearby, voiced “grave concerns” about Mamdani’s past comments but did not fully endorse Blakeman’s suggestion.
