Gordie Howe Bridge Pedestrian-Bike Path Opens to Public with New Rules
The multi-use walkway on the Gordie Howe International Bridge opened Wednesday, providing a free 3-kilometre route for cyclists and pedestrians under specific operating hours and speed limits.
After a week of vehicle traffic, the Gordie Howe International Bridge unveiled its multi-use path on Wednesday, offering a three-kilometre corridor for pedestrians, cyclists and approved mobility devices. The pathway operates daily, with summer hours of 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and winter hours of 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and may close early for adverse weather, with updates posted online. Users can access the path free of charge but must park at the Malden Park trailhead in Windsor or the Clark Park trailhead in Detroit, as no parking exists at the bridge terminals.
Queuing on adjacent streets or connecting paths before the official opening time is prohibited, and early arrivals are asked to return later. The route features a gentle 5 percent grade, takes roughly 45 minutes on foot or 20 minutes by bike, and enforces a 20 km/h speed limit. Allowed vehicles include bicycles, cargo bikes, folding bikes and pedal-assist e-bikes that cut off at 32 km/h and lack throttles; roller-blades, skateboards, hoverboards and motor-assisted scooters are barred. Travelers must carry proper documentation for border entry, and the bridge bans cannabis, alcohol and other illegal substances, as well as smoking, on its premises.
