Governance lapses at Sussex Cricket trigger heavy losses and points penalties

A governance review of Sussex Cricket Club exposed a major failure in oversight that resulted in an operating loss of £1.33 million for the 2024-2025 period. The board had approved an overly optimistic budget and did not adjust spending as income slipped and expenses rose, prompting the England and Wales Cricket Board to levy a 12-point deduction in the County Championship and further penalties in the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup.

New chair Ed Warner, appointed in July, described the club as over-ambitious and lacking proper controls, but said a turnaround is under way. The report also highlighted a skills gap on the board due to membership election rules. Head coach Paul Farbrace announced he will become director of cricket after the season, having led the team’s promotion the previous year. Overspend was attributed not only to player salaries but also to staff pay, ground costs and over-estimated revenue from a cancelled concert and weak match-day sales.
