Government to launch nearly 200 walk-in mental health hubs across England
England will receive up to 200 new walk-in mental health centres, many located in banks and libraries, to provide urgent care close to home.
England's government announced a programme to establish almost 200 walk-in mental health hubs by 2029, including 100 community centres and 59 new mental health A&Es alongside the 23 already running. The hubs will be situated in high-street venues such as banks and libraries, and will bring together existing clinical teams, often providing seven-day service and occasional short-stay beds. Six regions have already trialled the model since 2024.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the centres will give people quicker help and reduce pressure on emergency departments. Andy Bell of the Centre for Mental Health welcomed the move but warned that the new mental health A&Es need thorough testing and dedicated youth hubs. The Department of Health noted the scheme is funded with £343 million.
