Guillotine-themed protest sign sparks outrage at Santa Barbara council meeting

At a Santa Barbara City Council meeting focused on rent-stabilization, a protester brandished a sign featuring a guillotine flanked by elephant and donkey icons and the caption “Your term ends when we say so!”. The graphic incited hours of heckling, with council members, City Administrator Kelly McAdoo and staff receiving verbal attacks. Mayor Randy Rowse denounced the imagery as a test of free-speech boundaries, while mayoral hopeful Eric Friedman labeled it “not acceptable” given recent threats against elected officials.

Councilmembers Meagan Harmon and Oscar Gutierrez also called the sign unacceptable, with Gutierrez proposing to ask the city attorney about restricting such signs. Councilmember Mike Jordan expressed remorse for not speaking out more forcefully, and two councilors, Wendy Santamaria and Kristen Sneddon, declined to comment.
