Gymnast Dipa Karmakar retires after pioneering Olympic debut and historic wins

Dipa Karmakar, who grew up in Agartala, Tripura, rose from training on a makeshift vault built from scooter parts to become India's first female Olympic gymnast at the 2016 Rio Games, finishing fourth on the Produnova vault by a margin of 0.15 points. Despite being rejected early for her flat feet, coach Bishweshwar Nandi helped her develop the technique needed to compete at the highest level. After Rio, she captured a gold medal on vault at the 2018 FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey, and won a bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Her contributions were recognized with the Padma Shri, Arjuna Award and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna. Recurrent knee injuries and multiple surgeries tested her resolve, yet she returned to competition before announcing her retirement in October 2024 at age 31. Karmakar's legacy has inspired a new generation of Indian girls to pursue gymnastics and other sports previously considered out of reach.
