Half-price railcards for 18-year-olds to launch in August
From mid-August, 18-year-olds can obtain a 50 % discount railcard for a year, extending the existing 16-17 Saver scheme.
The Department for Transport confirmed that, starting 17 August, the 16-17 Saver railcard will be sold to 18-year-olds and remain valid for a full year from the date of purchase. Previously, the card expired on the holder’s 18th birthday, causing more than 70,000 students to pay roughly £175 more each year than younger peers. Priced at £35, the railcard provides a 50 % discount on most train fares.
Rail minister Lord Hendy described the amendment as common-sense and timely for teenagers pursuing education, training or early employment. Jacqueline Starr of the Rail Delivery Group said it shows the sector’s commitment to better value and integrated services, while NUS vice-president Kaynat Ahmad called the railcard essential for young people who rely on trains. The change arrives alongside a planned reduction in the cap on single bus fares in England.
