Hamburg Pride launches with doubled police presence after Berlin terror killing

Hamburg's Pride parade began Saturday with heightened security and twice as many officers as the previous year, following a deadly extremist attack at Berlin's Pride event.

Hamburg hosted one of Germany's largest Pride parades on Saturday, deploying roughly double the police force used last year to safeguard the event. About 250,000 people are expected to line the streets as dozens of trucks roll through the city, one of which honors the recent Berlin Pride gathering. The parade's theme emphasizes queer solidarity and a future free from fear.

The heightened security follows a fatal extremist assault near Berlin's Pride closing party, where a driver crashed a van into crowds and used a machete, killing a woman and wounding several others. The 21-year-old attacker, Abdul Ballout, was shot dead by police the following day, and investigators later found a video in which he claimed responsibility and expressed allegiance to the Islamic State group. Prosecutors note Ballout, born in Germany with Lebanese roots, had traveled to Lebanon in 2025 seeking to join IS in Syria.
