Hawaii police seek two suspects who allegedly threw a rock at a monk seal on Diamond Head Beach

Police on Oahu are looking for two unidentified men who are alleged to have attacked a juvenile Hawaiian monk seal at Diamond Head Beach on Sunday. Witnesses reported that the men approached the animal and that one of them threw a rock at it, prompting a nearby couple to step in and film the exchange. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources has launched an inquiry, reviewing statements and video footage, and is urging anyone with information to contact its Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement. While the seal showed no obvious serious injuries, officials reminded that the species is protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act, with violations carrying significant fines and possible criminal charges. This follows a recent, separate incident involving a monk seal on Maui that also drew public outrage.
