Healthcare sector faces escalating cyber attacks on billing systems
Craneware, a UK billing software firm, disclosed a major cyber breach that exposed customer and staff data, highlighting a widening wave of attacks on health-tech providers.
Last week, UK-based billing software vendor Craneware announced a serious cybersecurity incident that compromised a large amount of client and employee information. This breach is part of a broader pattern, with other billing firms such as TriZetto, CareCloud and Episource also suffering attacks in the past year. According to data from Becker’s and the Identity Theft Resource Center, 281 healthcare breaches were reported in the first half of 2026, trailing only the financial services sector’s 387 incidents.
Nationally, the United States logged 1,803 data compromises across all sectors, affecting an estimated 471.2 million individuals. Health records are especially valuable because they contain detailed medical, social and family data, exposing victims to severe privacy risks. Moreover, breach responses strain hospital finances and can divert resources from patient care, as highlighted by a JMIR study. With the sector’s increasing dependence on integrated data platforms and AI, experts warn that cyber resilience must become a top priority for both technology and healthcare leaders.
