Helicopters emerge as cost-effective hunters of battlefield drones

Modern militaries are turning attack helicopters into primary platforms for counter-drone missions, using guns, guided rockets and electronic warfare to tackle cheap unmanned aerial systems.

The rapid spread of low-cost drones across battlefields—from the Russia-Ukraine front to Iranian attacks on Gulf infrastructure—has exposed the economic mismatch of using expensive missile interceptors against cheap aerial targets. To address this, armed forces are retrofitting affordable systems such as upgraded L-70 and Zu-23 guns, laser-based electronic jammers, and guided rockets. The Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System and Europe’s FZ275 laser-guided rocket have proven effective when mounted on attack helicopters, allowing aircraft like the F-16 and Eurofighter to down Iranian Shahed drones.

India is advancing its own capability, with Adani Defence & Aerospace producing guidance kits for HAL Rudra and Prachand helicopters and the IAF seeking a 900-gram warhead optimized for swarm drones. Helicopters offer low operating costs, the ability to hover near likely ingress routes, and sensor suites that can spot small drones missed by radar. Exercises such as the IAF’s Rotor Clap-III are shaping counter-UAS tactics, though adverse weather and high-speed swarms remain operational hurdles. Overall, helicopters are being positioned as the most adaptable and economical solution to the growing drone threat.
