Hiker Faces Five-Minute Standoff with Mountain Lion on San Diego Trail

While trekking the Suycott Valley Trail in Mission Trails Regional Park, Gabe Yanez encountered a mountain lion perched just a few feet from the trail. Reacting instantly, he lifted his arms, roared and kept visual contact, mirroring the advice given to hikers in such situations. The predator stayed low, showing its teeth at one point, while Yanez continued to wave and shout, even flashing his own teeth.

After several minutes of this standoff, the lion shifted its position, then withdrew behind nearby brush and left the area about five minutes after the encounter began. Park ranger Christian Navarro confirmed that Yanez’s response was exactly what officials recommend and mentioned that several sightings since late June appear to involve the same juvenile lion, which typically roams large solitary territories. Yanez hopes his story will remind other park visitors to stay vigilant while hiking.
