Himachal consumer tribunal orders jewellery shop to return gold and pay Rs 35,000
A Himachal Pradesh consumer commission ruled that Kapoor Jewellers must give back 32 g of gold to a customer and pay Rs 35,000 in compensation.
Raj Kumar handed two old gold kadas weighing 32 g to Kapoor Jewellers in Paprola in September 2023, requesting new bangles of 40 g. The jeweller promised delivery within two months, but the work was delayed and, after the death of Sanjay Kapoor in 2024, the family took over and continued to stall. When the gold was not returned or the new ornaments delivered by September 2025, Kumar filed a complaint with the Kangra District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
The commission, comprising President Hemanshu Mishra and members Arti Sood and Narayan Thakur, accepted the receipt presented by the complainant as proof and dismissed the defendants' claims of no transaction. It ordered the shop to return the 32 g of gold within 60 days and to pay Rs 25,000 as compensation plus Rs 10,000 for litigation expenses.
Why it matters
The ruling underscores consumer protection rights and holds family-run businesses accountable for service failures.
