Hockey India switches World Cup kits to saffron, citing visibility and national symbolism

Hockey India revealed that the Indian men's and women's teams will don saffron uniforms at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, replacing the long-standing blue kits. The decision follows feedback that the blue shirts merged with the blue synthetic pitches now common worldwide, reducing on-field clarity. After consulting coaches and players, saffron was chosen for its visual contrast and its significance as a colour of the national flag, symbolising courage and sacrifice.
The kit features navy accents inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, mandala motifs, a Sudarshan Chakra graphic, and tricolour piping, with a Devanagari script rendering of "INDIA". A white version with the same design will also be available. Former captain Viren Rasquinha voiced disappointment, saying the blue jersey is integral to the team's identity. The federation noted that jersey colour changes are not unprecedented, citing yellow in 2014 and sky-blue in 2018.
