Houthi rebels linked to blast at Jubail gas plant as Aramco fire in Jazan is doused

A loud explosion was reported at a gas facility in Saudi Arabia's Jubail region, with Israeli media attributing it to Yemen's Houthi rebels, while a separate fire at an Aramco refinery in Jazan was extinguished without injuries.

An explosion reverberated through Jubail Industrial City, a major energy hub on Saudi Arabia's eastern coast, and w. Israeli Channel 14, Anadolu Agency and Iran's IRIB cited Arab sources linking the blast to the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels from Yemen, though Saudi authorities have not provided confirmation. Separately, a fire ignited at dawn in a Saudi Aramco refinery complex in Jazan, near the Red Sea, and was quickly suppressed by the company's industrial security firefighting units, with the Ministry of Energy reporting no injuries.

The ministry did not attribute the Jazan incident to any hostile act. The incidents come as the Houthis recently claimed missile and drone strikes on Aramco-linked sites in Jazan and Yanbu, and as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement to bolster collective security in the region.

Why it matters

The incidents highlight the vulnerability of Saudi energy assets to regional conflict and could affect global oil markets.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

All camps note that the Jazan fire was extinguished without injuries, but left-leaning coverage emphasizes the Houthis' claim of a drone strike and regional retaliation, center coverage reports the blast’s possible link to Houthis while stressing the lack of Saudi confirmation, and right-leaning coverage treats the event as a routine fire incident with no attribution.

LEFT

Frames the story around the Houthis’ claim of a drone strike and broader Iran-related tensions.

CENTER

Frames the story as an incident with uncertain attribution, noting sources linking the blast to Houthis but also the Saudi ministry’s silence on responsibility.

The left emphasises

  • Houthis claim drone strike on Aramco refinery
  • retaliation for Saudi aircraft violating Yemeni airspace
  • Iran tightens Hormuz demands
