This local win mirrors a worldwide reduction in road-related deaths, with the per-capita fatality rate falling 21 % from 2011 to 2025 even as vehicle fleets expanded. The transformation started when physicians and policymakers argued that vehicle design, not driver behavior, was the primary fault, prompting the 1966 National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and the creation of the agency now known as NHTSA.

Sweden’s Vision Zero, adopted in 1997, further lowered its road deaths by more than half, influencing New York’s own speed-limit cuts and resulting in a 31 % decline in city traffic fatalities by 2025. In the United States, pedestrian deaths have begun to recede thanks to infrastructure spending, stricter enforcement, and the spread of automatic emergency-braking with pedestrian detection, though challenges remain on dark roads.
