How to Check Your Income Tax Refund Status Online After FY 2025-26 Filing

Taxpayers who filed returns for FY 2025-26 can monitor the progress of any refund through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal.

After submitting an income-tax return for FY 2025-26 by the July 31 deadline, individuals can use the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website to see the status of any refund. A refund occurs when the tax paid, such as excess TDS or advance tax, exceeds the assessed liability, possibly due to deductions, exemptions, or treaty benefits. Sundeep Agarwal of Vialto Partners advises confirming that the return is verified, the PAN is linked to Aadhaar, the bank account is pre-validated, and there are no discrepancies in Form 26AS, AIS or TIS before checking the portal.

For treaty-related refunds, filing Form 10F or Form 67 is required. The portal’s “Know Your Refund Status” feature indicates whether the amount is under processing, issued, or adjusted against any tax demand, and most refunds are credited within four to five weeks, with interest applicable for delayed payments. A quick review of portal messages can inform taxpayers when the credit has been made to their account.

Why it matters

It shows taxpayers how to verify when they will receive refunds owed after filing their returns.
