How Your Neighborhood’s Look and Noise Level Can Shape Your Sleep
Research shows that visual and auditory features of a neighborhood influence residents' sleep duration, with safety perception and greenery linked to better rest.
A recent investigation indicates that the built environment of a neighborhood can have a measurable impact on sleep quality. Using artificial intelligence to evaluate more than 200,000 Google Street View photos, Professor Daisuke Matsushita’s team identified links between perceived safety, greenery, and enclosure with longer sleep times among 1,089 working adults living on lower floors in Tokyo. Conversely, areas with dense sidewalks and traffic signs, which signal higher foot traffic, were associated with a reduced sense of safety and shorter sleep durations.
Nutritionist Erin Palinski-Wade advises residents in noisy districts to employ white-noise devices and to block light with blackout curtains, while also emphasizing consistent sleep schedules. The study relies on participants' own recollections of sleep, limiting its precision, and focuses solely on a specific urban cohort, so broader applicability remains uncertain. Nonetheless, the research suggests city planners could use such metrics to design healthier living spaces.
