Iconic Singer-Actress Abbe Lane Passes Away at Age 93

Abbe Lane, the red-haired entertainer known for her sultry stage presence and film roles, died of natural causes on April 25 in Los Angeles at the age of 93, according to her son Steven Leff. Lane’s career spanned Broadway, where she co-starred with Tony Randall in the 1958 musical Oh Captain!, and Hollywood, where she shared the screen with Glenn Ford, Cornel Wilde, and other leading actors of the era. She also featured in several Italian movies and performed with her then-husband, famed bandleader Xavier Cugat, touring Europe and appearing on a journalist at one outlet's Show and The Ed Sullivan Show.

After a Mexican divorce from Cugat in 1964, she married talent agent Perry Leff, who died in 2020, and raised two sons, Steven and Andrew, along with a granddaughter, Kaia. Lane’s memoir, But Where Is Love?, recounted her turbulent marriage to Cugat, describing ongoing mental abuse. Her legacy includes recordings for RCA Victor and Mercury Records and numerous television guest spots on shows such as The Tonight Show and The Brady Bunch.
