Illinois couple found dead after disappearing on Lake Michigan kayaking trip
Two 20-year-olds from Illinois vanished while kayaking near Washington Island and were recovered dead two days later.
David Thalman, 20, and his girlfriend Franceska Warick, 20, disappeared on a kayaking outing near Washington Island, a popular destination on Lake Michigan. After a brief night-time search on Saturday, officials shifted to a recovery mission and found Thalman's body around 10:55 a.m. on Monday, with Warick recovered shortly after. Investigators believe the couple drowned, possibly after venturing into the water without personal flotation devices.
Thalman's former Re/Max supervisor, Jane Lee, recalled his strong work ethic and future plans in real estate, while Warick's family highlighted her love of the outdoors and aspirations to become a mother. Both were residents of Illinois, and the incident occurred in the treacherous strait known locally as “Death’s Door.”
