IN-SPACe seeks private operator for Rs 986 crore small-sat launch complex

IN-SPACe announced that it will invite eligible Indian companies to submit proposals for operating the Small Satellite Launch Complex under construction at Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu. The Rs 986 crore facility, spanning roughly 2,233 acres, is part of ISRO's second spaceport and is designed for rapid, high-frequency launches of small rockets like the SSLV. ISRO will provide the chosen operator with technical guidance, operational support, training and hand-holding until either three launch services are completed or one year passes.

Responsibilities will include managing launch campaigns, maintaining infrastructure, ensuring safety and security, and handling logistics and coordination with ISRO, IN-SPACe and launch customers. The site’s coastal position, about 55 km from Thoothukudi, allows rockets to fly directly south over the Indian Ocean, avoiding the dog-leg maneuver required at Sriharikota and thereby boosting efficiency. This move follows recent IN-SPACe initiatives to involve private firms in ground-station operations and to offer subsidies for launch services and technology transfer.
