India officially names 27 Arunachal sites, honoring 1962 war heroes
The Union government has added standard names to 27 locations in Arunachal on the official map, including two memorials for 1962 Chinese-war heroes.
On Friday, the Union government formally recorded standard names for 27 sites in Arunachal Pradesh on the national map. Among them are the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial, honoring Havildar Shere Thapa of the 2nd Battalion, Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, for his role in defending the Subansiri Valley during the 1962 Chinese incursion. The Jaswant Singh Rawat memorial on the Tawang road marks the spot where Rawat fought alone for 72 hours against Chinese troops.
The decree also names the historically significant Thag La pass, a key battleground in 1962, and other strategic mountain passes—Dzo La, Riza La and Pukur La—plus the village of Bisa. These designations cement the commemorative and strategic importance of the locations on India's official cartographic records.
