India prepares to evacuate 13 vessels stranded near Hormuz amid regional tensions
Around three dozen ships bound for India are stuck in the Hormuz and Red Sea area, with plans to move 13 of them, including fertiliser and energy cargoes.
New Delhi authorities have identified about thirty-six Indian and foreign-flagged ships awaiting passage to India in the Hormuz corridor and the Red Sea, with twenty-five of them positioned in the Hormuz zone. A coordinated effort will see thirteen vessels, including eight laden with fertiliser essential for Kharif crops and three transporting energy commodities, evacuated soon. Since the outbreak of hostilities in West Asia, a total of 67 ships of Indian interest have traversed the troubled sea lane, and more than 4,000 Indian seafarers have been safely returned home.
Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, chairing a review meeting, reaffirmed the government's commitment to maritime workers and highlighted the round-the-clock monitoring by the Directorate General of Marine Shipping (DGMA). The regulator has handled tens of thousands of distress calls and emails, providing repatriation, medical aid, counselling and financial support to families of the deceased.
