India reviews Bangladesh's request to hand over former PM Sheikh Hasina
India's government told a parliamentary panel that it is assessing Bangladesh's extradition request for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina under existing laws.
In a briefing to the parliamentary standing committee on external affairs, the Indian government said it is currently reviewing Bangladesh's demand to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in line with applicable statutes and procedures. The disclosure appeared in a report responding to the committee's ninth recommendation concerning the future of India-Bangladesh ties, which was tabled in Parliament. Bangladesh issued the request after sentencing Hasina to death in absentia, prompting the committee to seek regular progress reports.
The panel reiterated India's civilizational ethos of sheltering individuals under grave danger, yet affirmed that the country does not allow its territory to be used for political actions against another state. It urged the government to maintain a principled, humanitarian stance while meeting international obligations. Hasina has been residing in India since August 2024 after the collapse of the Awami League government and the rise of a BNP administration led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
