India's August-September monsoon rains expected to fall below normal levels
The India Meteorological Department says rainfall across the country during the second half of the monsoon is likely to be below average.
According to the IMD, the period from August to September will see lower than normal precipitation nationwide. The agency linked the outlook to the ongoing influence of El Niño, which typically weakens the Indian monsoon. Officials highlighted the continued risk of water-stress for agriculture and reservoirs. The forecast was released on Friday from New Delhi.
