India's finance ministry urges policy overhaul to tackle soaring oil prices and global risks
The Finance Ministry’s July Economic Review calls for a revamp of India’s policy framework to cope with high crude prices and widening geopolitical tensions.
The July edition of the Finance Ministry’s Economic Review stressed that India must redesign its policy approach to navigate an increasingly volatile global landscape, especially the pressure from elevated crude oil prices linked to the US-Iran conflict. It warned that sustained oil price increases could jeopardise the fiscal deficit and current-account balance, urging swift reforms and efficient implementation to attract capital.
The document also pointed to broader challenges such as AI developments and the weaponisation of supply chains, calling for long-term strategic leverage. Despite these risks, the ministry said India’s growth remains underpinned by strong domestic fundamentals, robust export performance, healthy services-trade surplus and steady remittances. Recent infrastructure spending and structural reforms have bolstered resilience, and comfortable foreign-exchange reserves are expected to support the external sector further.
Why it matters
India’s economic stability hinges on how quickly it adapts to rising oil costs and global geopolitical shocks.
