Indian discus thrower Seema Kaliramna clinches Commonwealth Games bronze
Seema Kaliramna earned a bronze medal in the women's discus at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a best throw of 58.65 metres.
At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Indian discus thrower Seema Kaliramna won the bronze medal by recording a distance of 58.65 metres, her only successful throw after an initial foul. The gold and silver medals went to Samantha Hall of Jamaica (61.66m) and Julia Tunks of Canada (60.67m) respectively. Kaliramna, who hails from Haryana and is pursuing a PhD in Physical Education at Chaudhary Bansi Lal University, returned to elite sport less than a year after the birth of her son, Rudra.
She had previously claimed gold at the 2025 National Games and set a personal best of 59.73m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar to qualify for the Games. Coached by her husband, former national discus thrower Ravinder "Monu" Kaliramna, she praised the support of the Athletics Federation of India and the Sports Authority of India. Despite cold weather challenges, she dedicated the medal to her husband, noting the difficulty of competing away from her child.
Why it matters
The medal highlights India's growing presence in international athletics and showcases a mother balancing elite sport, education, and family.
