Indian student arrested in Germany for Tucson girlfriend's murder
Varun Batchigari, an Indian national, was detained in Germany after being linked to the killing of his Tucson girlfriend, Julissa Rubi Salazar.
Investigators allege that Varun Batchigari murdered his 19-year-old girlfriend, Julissa Rubi Salazar, by strangulation inside her Tucson, Arizona, apartment near the University of Arizona. Salazar had been preparing to break up with Batchigari after earlier reports of sexual assault and a history of domestic violence. Following the homicide, Batchigari stole her phone and credit cards, sent messages to her mother, and escaped via Tucson International Airport, taking a connecting flight to Berlin with the aim of returning to India.
A warrant for his arrest was issued, and federal agents worked with German police to detain him upon arrival. Batchigari, who had been expelled from the University of Arizona and faced an open assault case in Pima County, will be extradited to Arizona to be booked on a first-degree murder charge. Salazar is remembered by her family as a beloved daughter and sister.
