Indiana man charged after biting newborn's cheek in early-morning incident
Police arrested 18-year-old Kaden Manuel Lewis Shurm in Bloomington after he admitted biting a 9-day-old infant’s face, describing the damage as looking like a “busted up egg.”
Bloomington police allege that 18-year-old Kaden Manuel Lewis Shurm, a 250-pound individual, bit a 9-day-old newborn’s cheek in a series of bites that he later described as leaving the infant’s face resembling a “busted up egg.” The incident occurred around 4 a.m., and a pediatrician reported the injuries to child protective services on July 14, triggering an investigation. Shurm was apprehended at the hospital and charged with felony battery causing injury to a person under 14, as well as separate felony charges for battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness, plus a misdemeanor battery count.
He initially posted a $5,500 bond for the child-abuse charge on July 21, but a bond-revocation warrant for the other offenses resulted in his re-arrest. The baby’s current medical condition has not been disclosed, and any familial relationship between Shurm and the child remains unclear.
