Investigation Finds Southern California Edison Gear Triggered 2025 Eaton Wildfire
Los Angeles County fire officials concluded that an out-of-service Southern California Edison tower caused the 2025 Eaton Fire that killed 19 people and damaged thousands of structures.
A report released by Los Angeles County Fire officials attributes the deadly 2025 Eaton Fire to a Southern California Edison tower that was not in service at the time of the incident. The conclusion follows an exhaustive 18-month investigation that employed retained electrical and metallurgical experts to trace the ignition to arcing on the idle SCE structure. The wildfire claimed 19 lives, primarily in west Altadena, and devastated over 9,000 residential and commercial properties across 22 square miles.
Southern California Edison has filed lawsuits alleging that county agencies failed to issue timely evacuation warnings and that water providers, including Pasadena Water and Power, did not supply adequate water for firefighting efforts. County officials declined to comment on the latest filings. The Eaton Fire erupted concurrently with the Palisades Fire, another massive blaze that killed 12 people and destroyed more than 6,800 structures in Pacific Palisades, where a suspect, Jonathan Rinderknecht, faces a new trial after a prior arson case ended in a mistrial.
