Israeli Forces Detain Gaza Hospital Director Hussam Abu Safiya Amid Ongoing Conflict

As director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya remained in Gaza throughout intense Israeli assaults, actively reporting on the lack of supplies, malnutrition among children, and repeated shelling of the facility. He coordinated aid, including a $1,000 donation for vulnerable families, and was noted for moving constantly among wards despite personal exhaustion. On October 23, 2024, he was pressured by Israeli soldiers to evacuate the hospital and was physically assaulted when he did not respond immediately.
In late November, he sustained injuries from a quadcopter strike, requiring crutches. The hospital endured further destruction, and nurse Ahmed Al-Kahlout was killed on November 29, 2024. Abu Safiya was arrested on December 27, 2024, and his detention has drawn criticism from Amnesty International and Physicians for Human Rights Israel, which warn his condition is deteriorating.
