Italian startup equips humanoid robot with sensor skin to detect workers before contact

Generative Bionics unveiled its Gene.01 humanoid robot, wrapped in a sensor-filled skin that can sense a person’s proximity, touch, temperature and force before any collision occurs.

Generative Bionics’ Gene.01 humanoid is covered in a smart skin that simultaneously detects proximity, touch, temperature and applied force, offering an early alert when a person approaches its torso or limbs. This capability is intended to let the robot’s control software intervene before a collision and to modulate its response during physical interaction. The firm has not released detailed workplace safety metrics from extended industrial use, so the claimed benefits remain unverified.

Gene.01 is being tailored for shipyard welding tasks in partnership with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, and the company plans to adapt the platform for logistics, inspection and healthcare applications. An $81 million seed investment led by CDP Venture Capital, with participation from AMD Ventures, Duferco, Eni Next, RoboIT and Tether, will fund further development and a European supply chain partnership with Synapticon for actuation components. An open-source digital model of the robot is also available to help developers prototype applications in simulation before accessing the physical hardware.
