Carville explained that Trump would likely contact JD Vance, the incoming president, to issue an immediate, all-encompassing pardon for any wrongdoing. He noted that doubts about the legality of a self-pardon would motivate Trump to eliminate that uncertainty by resigning before the term ends.
Even if Trump remained in office through the full four years, Carville argued he would still step down two days before the term concludes to secure the pardon. The strategist referenced a Wall Street Journal story about Trump’s nightly fundraising calls to Meredith O’Rourke, labeling it as the kind of conduct he expects to be covered by such a pardon. The White House has not responded to requests for comment.
