In a 598-page defence document adopted by the cabinet, Japan outlined a shift toward modern warfare capabilities, stressing the urgency of developing combat drones and AI systems after observing their use in Ukraine and the Middle East. The Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency selected four out of 38 applicants for a rapid-development programme, with sea trials slated for early August.
