John Carpenter launches ‘Cathedral’ graphic novel and soundtrack with family team

After dreaming of an abandoned Los Angeles church whose elevator descends to hell, veteran filmmaker John Carpenter devised “Cathedral,” a horror-themed graphic novel accompanied by an original soundtrack. To keep costs low, he enlisted his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies to compose the eerie instrumental tracks that echo his classic scores. His wife Sandy King, who runs a comic-book publishing house, oversaw the novel’s production.

In a recent interview, the family talked about their artistic workflow, their unease about artificial-intelligence tools, and a lingering dream about basketball legend Larry Bird. The project, described as a “family affair,” will be available this Friday. Carpenter emphasized that music remains a uniquely human art form despite rapid AI advances.
