John Legend cast as Harry Belafonte in Bill Condon's Apartheid-era film "The Road Home"
EGOT winner John Legend will portray Harry Belafonte in Bill Condon’s new drama about Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba and the Graceland tour, with filming now underway in South Africa.
John Legend, the multi-award-winning singer-songwriter, has been confirmed to play civil-rights icon Harry Belafonte in Bill Condon’s upcoming feature "The Road Home." The story centers on South African jazz legends Hugh Masekela and Miriam "Mama Africa" Makeba and their involvement in Paul Simon’s controversial Graceland tour during the late 1980s. Thabo Rametsi portrays Masekela, while Cynthia Erivo appears as Makeba, and Guy Pearce takes on Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, the anti-Apartheid leader who spearheads a boycott of Simon’s album.
The production, backed by Canal+, Studiocanal, Flora Films and Blue Ice, is currently shooting in South Africa and will be distributed across multiple territories. Co-producer Hilton Rosenthal is overseeing new recordings of Masekela and Makeba’s music for the soundtrack. Executive producers include Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern, Shana Eddy-Grouf and others from Studiocanal and the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation.
