Judge delays release of Justin Bukulatjpi as bail location remains unresolved

Twenty-year-old Justin Bukulatjpi, charged with murder and serious injury in a Milingimbi brawl, stays in custody because his lawyers have not secured an acceptable bail address.

Bukulatjpi was arrested earlier this year after a fight in Milingimbi that resulted in one death and another person being seriously harmed. Although a court granted him bail in May, he remains detained while his defense team searches for a suitable location to satisfy bail conditions. The lawyers are now exploring whether a resident of South Goulbourn Island would agree to guarantee his appearance if released there.

Why it matters

The delay underscores difficulties in securing bail for serious offenses in remote communities.
