July Thali Prices Rise as Onion, Oil and Chicken Costs Surge
In July, the cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali climbed 4% and a non-vegetarian thali 9% year-on-year, driven by higher onion, oil, LPG and chicken prices.
According to a report released on Friday, July saw a noticeable uptick in the cost of home-cooked thalis. A vegetarian thali was 4% pricier than a year ago, whereas a non-vegetarian thali cost 9% more, reflecting spikes in key ingredients. Onion prices jumped 20%, vegetable oil rose 11%, LPG cylinders increased 10%, and broiler chicken surged 14% from the previous year.
Crisil Intelligence highlighted that chicken accounts for nearly half the expense of a non-vegetarian meal, magnifying its effect on the overall price. Meanwhile, potatoes fell 12% and tomatoes slipped 2%, helping to temper the increase. In July, the vegetarian thali’s price rose an additional 2% from June, while the non-vegetarian thali remained unchanged as chicken prices fell 2% during the month.
