July’s standout album releases span global pop icons to underground innovators
July delivered a flood of new records, from major acts like Charli XCX, The Strokes and Jack White to emerging artists such as Dobby, Yard Act and Swapmeet.
July’s music calendar was packed with releases ranging from chart-topping pop to avant-garde experiments. Charli XCX returned with Music, Fashion, Film, a candid record that balances fame-induced swagger with personal doubt. The Strokes teamed up with Rick Rubin for Reality Awaits, an album that leans into synth-laden, satirical commentary while nodding to their early-2000s sound.
Jack White’s Frozen Charlotte showcases his signature riff-driven garage rock, recorded with his touring band in Nashville. Australian acts made their mark too: Swapmeet’s debut Mount Zero blends noisy guitars with heartfelt lyricism; Pain Gain’s self-titled debut fuses analog guitars with glitchy textures; and Dobby’s Marshmallow offers a sci-fi narrative stitched together with rap, jazz and orchestral flourishes. Yard Act’s You’re Gonna Need A Little Music and Four Tet’s enigmatic Wingdings project added further depth to the month’s diverse offerings.
