Juvenile tiger shark spotted off Massachusetts hints at warming Atlantic waters
Two Cape Cod anglers caught a five-foot tiger shark near Falmouth, a species usually found in tropical seas, and released it after realizing its unusual presence.
While fishing off Falmouth, Massachusetts, brothers Nate and Nelson Rouette unexpectedly caught a juvenile tiger shark, a species that normally inhabits tropical waters such as the Caribbean. The five-foot shark, capable of growing over 15 feet, was released after the brothers recognized its distinctive stripes. Marine scientists, including John Chisholm of the New England Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, view the sighting as evidence that warming sea temperatures are extending suitable habitat for tiger sharks into the Atlantic off New England.
Recent years have seen more juvenile tiger sharks and other species, like great whites, appearing farther north, likely attracted by warmer waters and abundant prey. The Rouettes, who also work with On The Water magazine, said the encounter underscored the tangible effects of climate change on local marine ecosystems. Researchers plan to investigate whether these waters could become a new nursery area for the species. The incident highlights a broader trend of marine fauna migrating toward higher latitudes as global oceans heat.
