Katherine residents rally over surge in vehicle thefts and reckless driving

In Katherine, roughly 50 residents assembled on the main thoroughfare after a black Volkswagen, suspected of being stolen, crashed on Stutterd Street, endangering a mother and her toddler. Police reported that about seven people exited the vehicle and have since identified three suspects, explaining they avoided a chase to prevent further risk. Community leaders, such as local businessman Ben Coutts and council member Toni Tapp Coutts, urged increased police presence and discussed implementing a temporary youth curfew similar to that used in Alice Springs.

NT Police Superintendent Virginia Read echoed the need for additional resources, while Member for Katherine Jo Hersey pledged to raise the issue with Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro. Some residents expressed frustration that official crime statistics show declines in most offenses, yet vehicle thefts have risen, highlighting a gap between data and lived experience.
