Fourteen elephants discovered dead in the Amboseli region of southern Kenya have prompted an emergency investigation by the Kenya Wildlife Service.
An urgent inquiry has been launched after 14 elephants were found dead in the Amboseli ecosystem of southern Kenya, near the border with Tanzania. The Kenya Wildlife Service said specialists are conducting necropsies and have dispatched tissue specimens to laboratories to determine if disease, toxins or another cause is responsible. The carcasses were discovered at multiple points ranging from about 15 to 30 kilometres outside Amboseli National Park and include both males and females of different ages, indicating the loss is not confined to a single herd.
Authorities highlighted that such a mass mortality event has not been recorded in the region for decades, especially after successful anti-poaching efforts. Duncan Wanyama, the agency’s head of communication, relayed the findings to local media. The Amboseli Trust for Elephants estimates the ecosystem supports over 2,000 elephants as of 2025.
