Las Vegas officer and armed suspect both die after midday gunfight
A Las Vegas police officer, a Marine veteran, was fatally shot while confronting an armed suspect who also died at the scene.
Police were dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. to a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue after a report of a drunken person waving a firearm. Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department found the suspect near Mountain Vista Street and the Interstate 11 underpass, where he opened fire on them. In the ensuing exchange, the suspect was killed on site and a 30-year-old Marine-veteran officer was wounded, later succumbing to his injuries at University Medical Center.
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill briefed the media, highlighting the officer's service since November 2023 and expressing condolences to his family and fellow officers. The Nevada State Police also issued a statement of sympathy, and the department pledged support to the fallen officer’s loved ones.
